Intramuscular Stimulation (IMS), or dry needling, is a specialized therapeutic technique used to treat chronic pain and persistent muscle tightness. Our Physiotherapists insert a thin needle into tense, tender portions of the muscle known as trigger points. This causes a muscle twitch that release tension and helps reset the neuromuscular system.
This leads to and immediate decrease in pain caused by the trigger point, improves range of motion, and promotes blood flow and healing. It is particularly effective for treating radiating pain conditions, chronic tension, and deeper muscles that can not be reached with traditional manual therapy and massage techniques. If it is indicated for your condition your physiotherapist will integrate it as part of your treatment.
People with deep, aching pain along the spine that feels “locked up” regardless of massage and stretching.
Individuals dealing with shortened and tense muscles from repeated training and use
Individuals experiencing trigger point pain as referral in different parts of the body, these symptoms are commonly misdiagnosed as nerve pain radiating through the arm or leg.
Those suffering from headaches originating from tight muscles and trigger points in the neck and shoulders, these are often misdiagnosed as migraines.
Individuals needing help managing localized flare ups of muscle and nerve sensitivity.
Who is this treatment for?
IMS is an ideal solution for those suffering from stubborn, chronic tightness or radiating pain that has not responded to traditional massage and stretching. Whether you are an athlete recovering from repetitive strain or someone dealing with long-term postural stiffness, IMS provides a targeted "reset" to help you move without discomfort.
The needle insertion causes a reflex “twitch” that physically forces the shortened muscle to release and reset its resting length.
Unlike treatments that only address surface pain, IMS penetrates directly into deep “trigger points” to fix the underlying mechanical problem.
Effectively treats persistent muscle shortening that has not responded to stretching or standard massage.
Deactivates hyper-irritable spots that send “ghost” pain signals to other parts of the body (e.g., neck knots causing headaches).
Helps calm a hypersensitive nervous system, breaking the cycle of neuropathic pain often found in chronic conditions.
Provides fast-acting relief for nerve-related conditions by physically releasing the pressure on irritated nerve endings.
The micro-trauma from the needle stimulates a healing response, flushing fresh blood and oxygen into old, stagnant injuries.
By releasing the “brakes” of tight muscles, joint mobility is immediately improved, allowing for fluid, pain-free movement.
A highly effective “reset” for athletes dealing with overuse injuries, helping them return to training faster.
